That's not necessarily true. Putting this much detail into the shading of a 2D animation is extremely expensive for a TV series, so I wouldn't look at this as a reference for what it would've looked like. Besides, this picture is actually drawn, while a lot of shows use cel shading or similar techniques to produce animation much more easily.
