About
Gawr Gura is an English speaking member of the VTuber group Hololive, a creation of Cover Corp. She is one of five Hololive characters that were introduced specifically for English-speaking audiences. Gawr Gura is depicted in an anime style, with light blue eyes, white hair, and a blue sweater that resembles a shark.
According to her character profile on the Cover Corp website[1] Gawr Gura is a descendant of Atlantis. She grew bored of Atlantis and swam to earth, buying her signature shark hoodie once on land. She can talk with sea creatures, has a tail, and is partial to rhythm games.
History
In an attempt to spread the Japanese craze of Vtubers, or Virtual YouTubers, to English speaking audiences, Hololive introduced a series of five new Vtubers made specifically for a western demographic. This announcement came on September 9th, 2020. Gawr Gura is one of the most popular of these five.
On September 13th, Gawr Gura made her debut on YouTube[2], where she live-streamed a Q&A and introduction-style video. The stream garnered over 801,000 views and 75,000 likes in three days. The next day, she streamed shark simulator Man Eater, followed by rhythm game Muse Dash on September 15th. These videos garnered 451,000 views, and 487,000 views respectively.
Online Presence
Besides her YouTube page, Gawr Gura also has a Twitter account with over 133,000 followers.
Leading up to her YouTube debut, several companies reported on the Vtuber group, including Crunchyroll[3] and Siliconera[4]. Hololive fans started making and sharing fan art of Gawr Guru across social media, particularly on Twitter. On September 12th, Twitter user kaiipuppy tweeted out a handdrawn video meme of Gawr Gura, captioned, "i am losing my mind over this shark." The post gained over 2.1 thousand likes and 858 retweets in four days.
Twitter fan account EngVTubersOOC[5] was opened in September 2020, and shared a fan-made video of Gawr Gura. The post gained 1.7 thousand likes and over 15.9 thousand views in two days. The account gained over 10.6 thousand followers before its first month online.
