I felt it better they kept Bill from being sympathetic because of his, quote unquote 'death' at the end. It would've taken some of the wind out of Stanley's heroic moment. Overall, I feel the insanity should've been enough to garner sympathy if people want to be sympathetic for him.

A being realizing their world is so limited, and finally gaining the knowledge to escape to a new one, only to be imprisoned again. The Nightmare Realm isnt Bill's home Dimension, It's where he was imprisoned for whatever he did to his home Dimension, otherwise how would you explain his crew? With only Kryptos, Amorphous Shape, and Hectorgon being possible beings like him.
