ATTN YOUTUBERS Before I begin, I'm speaking as an individual. Not as a member of Game Grumps I'd like to speak in regards to the recent developments as covered by H3H3 So it appears there's a very real possibility that the newest algorithmic change to the site is to put videos with viewer engagement (comments and likes) above all else. IF PROVEN TRUE through future updates in the YouTube Certification Program, this is a scary development. This encourages mass manipulation of viewers via things like giveaways and begging for engagement quotas to be met. Once again turning the focus further and further away fromm producing quality content. In 2011 YouTube changed their algorithm for earnings from views to minutes watched. This was enacted as a method of combating system abuse with what you might remember, "reply girls". In doing so, this did kill those spam channels, but it also killed any channel that developed shorter more highly produced content with long production cycles (animations, reviews, sketch comedy, VFX shorts) What can be done about this? Well, the only thing YouTube cares about i that their large creators stay on the platform for their advertisers. They hold our colleagues in a vice grip, everyone and their entire financial stability. They act like no matter the changes, they will be eventually normalized and those that can't survive (much like the animators in 2011) will be purged. This has been their attitude for close to a decade. YouTubers don't have a union to fall ack on, we can't strike to request better working conditions. But I can guarantee that the one thing they don't want is for you all to leave. There's a breaking point, which I honestly think is coming. They're terrified of competitors like Twitch. They will do ANYTHING to keep their big creators off that platform. This site only gets more scary as a competitor to them as they allow not just streaming but actual video uploads If changes like this are made and you're a large YouTuber, it's your duty as the one in the crowd with a megaphone to make your voice heard. These changes are outrageous and benefit nobody. Speak out not just for your own financial stability, but that of those in the future who wish to follow in your footsteps, regardless of the tide washing them away. That said, the last thing YouTube wants to see in their future is something like #TwitchSwitch trending Your move YouTube -2306 びTweet GIF
