Simple. Memes are the DNA of the soul, the genes of a culture. Culture is formed from more than mere image macros and inside jokes; it's a collection of ideals, personality, experiences. If something happens, somebody who was there can say "Oh yeah, I remember that!" and automatically recall details about it. One thought triggering another. It's memetic.
In other words, culture and its spread are very similar to the simpler memes and viral videos, just on a grander scale. Your very heritage and all the hundreds of years of human history that have come before it, are the culmination of countless creations and mutations of your ancestor's memes.
Or maybe I'm just really overthinking it. Either way, Monsoon would be proud.
