January 29 Oval Office Meetin On January 29, I went to the Oval Office at the request of the President. He sat behind the desk, and I sat in the middle of a row of empty chairs in front of the desk. We exchanged pleasantries and I told the President that I hoped that we would have a productive working relationship. Jared Kushner left the room by the grandfather clock and we were alone. It was at this moment that the President stood up and leaned over the desk. He looked at me and he appeared scared. He said to me "I don't know what I'm doing". I didn't move, speak or change my facial expression during the awkward silence that followed. He said it again, "I don't know what I'm doing". Confused, I asked the President what he meant by this. “I just say words that come into my head", he said, "They make me give speeches about politics. I don't know what any of it means. I just want to watch TV while sprawled across my bed in my bathrobe". Before I could fully extinguish the mental image from my mind, he told me how he doesn't even know what a “Rence Priebus" is Recognising that it would be inappropriate for an FBI Director to tell the President how to govern, I demurred and told the President that I'll give him his very own police badge next time he visits the J. Edgar Hoover building. This immediately lifted his mood. After the meeting I immediately made notes on a Speak & Spell that was in the Chief of Staff's Office.
