See, this is one of the worst changes you could make, because… well, Light's whole character is based on the fact that he WASN'T a burgeoning psychopath. He was intelligent and moral. He was pretty well-off. He had a good family life. He had friends. He was good-looking and physically fit. If Light hadn't found it, he would probably end up being a lawyer or a policeman and having a long and prosperous career as a model citizen. And none of that saved him; the idea was that the temptation of the Death Note would have corrupted anyone. Making him a school shooter from the start just tells us that when you give a bad person power, they'll… stay a bad person.

Either its 'instead of shooting up his school he gets supernatural powers' or there is a well executed prank with hundreds of people on KYM, Reddit, and rotten tomatoes all pulling a fast one on us.

Some day I want to find out why the overall Hollywood machine likes to take material that a small group likes, then actively set about to ruin what they love. Making a faithful adaptation would cost just as much money as making shit. In fact I suspect the faithful adaptations save a lot on writing. It has to be someone willing to lose potential profits for the principal of ruining anime adaptations. I can come up with no better explanation.
