(Answering the question in the notes:)
A game should always first be judged in the context of its time. It's unfair to compare it to later titles that tried to improve all the aspects of it by using more cutting edge technology and decades of game design experience.
HOWEVER, it's also important to note weather the game withstood the test of time or not, if it "aged well" and is still enjoyable for modern audiences. If note, it could remains forever as a landmark, a step towards the right direction. If it is, then and only then could you call that game a "classic".
That is also why I don't personally like numeral rating system, but that's another debate…
