Because the people who own League of Legends happen to be a company known as Tencent腾讯 You probably have no idea who this company is, even if you play League, and with good reason; whereas companies like EA are incredibly auspicious when it comes to how mediocre and anti-consumer their practices are, Tencentare smart enough to manipulate you without saying a word about it. Let's learn a little more about Tencent. Tencentis a Chinese company who owns a monopoly in online games(like League) instant messaging clients .social networking sites Chinese paypal equivalents (i.e: knock-offs) Soso.com, or "Chinese Google" microblogging sites If you live in China, you have to go through Tencent ifyou want access to half the things on your (heavily-neutered and outright censored) internet. Yes, all one billion of them In addition, Tencent has 4 wholly-owned foreign enterprises and twenty smaller subsidiaries. These include Riot Games, creators of League of Legends Tencent now controls every facet of the game. Epic Games, creators of such titles as Gears of War. As well as the Unreal Engine. Yes, if your game uses Unreal, you are giving Tencent royalties.
