I consider anyone to be in Smash bros a member of the family. The scope was narrowed greatly during Melee, because the only fighters allowed in matches were fighters and Pokemon, but now it's different. It doesn't matter if they're a playable character, an assist trophy, a Pokemon, an extra during a Final Smash or even a stage hazard or stage boss, everyone's showing up at the stage and those who fight are considered part of Smash.
