Upper Peninsula 2004 Winter Wheat Variety Trial C. J. Kapp, D.H. Min Discussion The 2004 Upper Peninsula wheat variety trial was established in Chatham, Mi at the Upper Peninsula Experiment Station. Plot design was a Random Complete Block with 5 replications. Each plot was seeded with a Carter research seeder. Plot length was 30 ft long and 3 ft wide. Each plot consisted of 5 rows with 6 inch spacing. Plots were trimmed to 28 ft long before harvest. Yields were adjusted to 13.5 % moisture. The value calculated as the "least significant difference" or "LSD" is the amount that an individual hybrid would have to differ from another hybrid in the same test to be considered statistically significantly different from that hybrid. The CV, or coefficient of variation, is indicative of a trial's precision. Trials with low levels of error variation have lower CV values. The overall purpose of the trial was to determine if winter wheat could be grown in Chatham, and if so, what type of yield would be generated. Just as a side note, if there is interest in winter wheat, please let me know. I haven't received any seed this year, and it is getting a little late to plant right now. However, I will put in a variety trial with more wheat hybrids next year if enough producers are interested. As of right now, I believe that wheat could be a viable cash crop in the Upper Peninsula. Transportation to market is the biggest deciding factor. Current cash price for hard red winter wheat at this printing is S3.38.
