It really is that simple: the items are either too expensive or bad for you anyways. NOT buying large purchase items you can't afford or items that are bad for your health is called "being smart with your money".

The companies can either change business models, change to a new industry (like how Nintendo made playing cards before switching to video games), or make something better/less expensive. Otherwise, they will naturally go out of business.

It's literally Business 101.
