Lapwing, also known as Gosling, is a VRChat avatar by Kuji / Long that went viral in April 2025 after a video of its face tracking add-on was posted to X / Twitter by @Hash2305. The character, depicted as an anime girl with white hair, bangs and pale blue eyes, was released in August 2023 and inspired a variety of fan art and content shortly after the April 2025 face tracking video was posted. Lapwing gained the nickname "Gosling" after YouTuber GasMaskedThings posted the comment, "There is no Ryan Gosling reaction image that can fully convey the feels rn" under the face tracking demo, a reference to the "You look so lonely" scene in Blade Runner 2049.

Origin

On August 14th, 2023, Booth.pm^[1] user Long released a VRChat avatar named Lapwing, depicted as an anime girl with white hair and bangs. The avatar was liked over 8,000 times in two years.

On April 3rd, 2025, X^[2] user @Hash2305 posted a video showcasing face tracking software made for Lapwing, garnering over 28,000 likes and 5,000 reposts in two weeks. The demo was also posted to the Hash YouTube^[3] channel, garnering over 505,000 views in the same span of time. The face tracking software was made available on ko-fi.^[4]

On April 8th, YouTuber^[5] @GasMaskedThings posted the comment, "There is no Ryan Gosling reaction image that can fully convey the feels rn" under the video, garnering over 14,000 likes in eight days. This comment purportedly inspired her nickname "Gosling" and is meant to express a feeling of desire for the character to be real.

Lapwing aka Gosling inspired a variety of fan art and content over the following weeks. For example, on April 12th, 2025, X^[6] user @gazudraw posted fan art of the character captioned "Gosling," garnering over 13,000 likes in five days.

On April 13th, X^[7] user @liebebento posted a piece of artwork that incorporates Ryan Gosling from Blade Runner 2049, garnering over 15,000 likes in three days. On April 15th, X^[8] user @Hash2305, who developed the face tracking add-on, made a post thanking people for their support and sharing Lapwing art, garnering over 8,000 likes in a day.

On April 16th, X^[9] user @BigBearUM posted a photograph of a sketchbook filled with sketches of Lapwing, garnering over 1,700 likes in under a day.
