That arguably might be intentional. He has a garnering folk hero reputation in-universe thanks to all the villages he's saved through extensive gobbo slaughter, but anyone that meets him either sees a kinda disturbing and smelly weirdo that can't even hold a basic conversation (pretty much every other adventurer in his town) or a truly pitiable guy that needs help (his party, Priestess and High Elf Archer in particular making efforts to have him emote more).
