I used to play on my Grandma's NES whenever I visited. Mario Bros, Mario Bros 3, Archon, plenty of games that were fun for little me. Compare a game like the original Mario Bros to its newer iterations, or even contemporaries such as Rayman Origins/Legends and it is a pretty stark difference in quality of gameplay variety and feel, though. Old games were limited in control, capability, scope, graphics, writing… Just about every aspect of them has been improved upon in recent years. Throwbacks like Shovel Knight are so venerated because they tap into that nostalgia of tough-but-fair while also learning from the mistakes of the past, the difference between a loving homage (New Retro Wave music) to paint-by-the-numbers recreations (Ready Player One's book). Old games should be celebrated for how they paved the way and introduced us to a new, exciting world of possibilities for entertainment, but don't make them idols of unassailable gameplay. Age has corroded that and we shouldn't let ourselves be lost to the now because we're stuck in the past.

And for what it's worth, my brother bought me Duck Tales Remastered. It's a lot prettier, but it still isn't really all that fun. The Moon theme is still great, though; game music is one thing that can age much more gracefully.
