feministfandom Carmen Sandiego: Hero or Villain? I noticed a few complaints about the fact that Carmen Sandiego is supposedly no longer a villain. But Carmen Sandiego has never been just a villain. She has always been what is referred to as a gentleman thief, concisely described by Wikipedia as "A gentleman or lady thief who has inherited wealth and is characterised by impeccable manners, charm, courteousness, and the avoidance of physical force or intimidation to steal. As such, they steal not only to gain material wealth but also for the thrill of the act itself, which is often combined in fiction with correcting a moral wrong, selecting wealthy targets, or stealing only particular rare or challenging objects. Some examples of other gentleman thieves: Flynn Rider (Tangled) Selina Kyle (Batwoman) Danny and Debbie Ocean (from the Ocean's 11 series) Gambit (X-Men) Thomas Crown (The Thomas Crown Affair) I believe that Carmen Sandiego steals out of a moral disdain for large wealthy institutions such as AC.M.E. (in the original series.) In the new series V.I.L.E. is clearly representative of the wealthy corporate monopolies that control our governments (as shown by their off-brand rice.) The new series doesn't actually differ that much, I believe it simply gives Carmen's thievery efforts more focused and effective. Think of like this: in the original series, she stole from the rich. In the new series, she steals from the rich and gives to the poor
