YOU are not Irish Ok so first of all if the person is anyway involved with tourism in Ireland this probably wont piss them off at all. But, for the other 90% of the population a strong American accent stating loudly that they are in fact Irish is just wrong. Ok I cant completely destroy this as it brings a great deal of tourism to the small island of Irelan but there are a few guidelines to follow; 1) You are not Irish People of South America do not walk around calling themselves Spanish or Australians calling themselves British. Maybe its cool or nice to be different but whatever country you are born n is your nationality, this may change slightly if your direct parents are Irish but not a great distant aunt 2) Say Trish Ancestry and not Irish ts ok to say you have Irish ancestry as long as you are not calling yourself directly 3) We do not know Paddy Me Paddyness Dont go asking local people if they know a person who has been dead over 100 years. If you are determined to find your ancestry hire smeon to look into it or go through the proper channels Asking for your ong lost great great grandfather inthe pub on a friday night will not be the answer. Say "Oh, I'ma tenth part Scottish on my father's side" and think that means something. After living in Australia and America most of my adult life, I can't count the number of times get a response like this when I tell someone I'm Scottish: "Amazing, so am I! I'm 1/10th Scottish on my father's side, half removed." I've formulated an automatic "Good-for-you reply in hopes that, without being rude, that is the end of the conversation. To say that Scots are proud of their heritage and ancestry would be whimsical. Scotland is a place where your neighbours know your granny for half a century, a culture where your roots can be traced back over thousands of years. Not only does your ancestry shape your family lineage, it defines your social status, your moral foundation, your legacy, giving you a sense of belonging. Our generation not only learns from our grandparents, but Scots are privileged to centuries of knowledge and wisdom passed down primarily through our kin. It's this aspect of our culture that I cherish and miss the most. Americans are annoying about their 'heritage.' Every American you meet is not actually American. They are a fourth Polish, 3/17 Italian, ten other random countries, and then of course half Irish. Honestly, I don't really care if your great grandfather's dog walker's best friend's roommate was Irish. I really don't The amount of "Oh my gaaawwwd, me too!" retorts I heard when I said I was Irish was quite silly. I finally learned that "I'm from Ireland" means what I wanted to say to them better than "I'm Irish" does I don't want to say I don't respect people's rich heritage (a nice mixture makes a country more interesting; the melting pot of cultures and skin colours is one reason why Brazil is my favourite country, for example), but when people start talking about it as if it were genetics, and their Italian part makes them more passionate and their Irish part makes them good drinkers, I really do have to roll my eyes
