Some long ass time ago I heard rumor that Araki's original plan was to make Kakyoin female and eventually the girlfriend of Jotaro, but due that it was the only change to the character (Considering every fight that she would have been in and the violence of said fights) and the time of the publication of the manga, the editors pushed him to change the character to a male, just like how Akira Toriyama was forced to change Goku into a male.
