About
Captain Marvel Cats refers to a hashtag popularized by Korean Twitter users which users use to post pictures of their cats photoshopped onto posters for the 2019 film Captain Marvel. The trend was inspired by the cat in the film, Goose.
Origin
In Captain Marvel, main character Carol Danvers has a cat named Goose. Goose quickly became one of the favorite aspects of the film for many fans, walking the red carpet at the film's premiere.[1] On March 8th, 2018, Korean Twitter users began tweeting photoshops of their cats onto the Captain Marvel film poster in tribute to Goose. The earliest known post with the hashtag was made by @cola_null,[2] though the tweet failed to break 10 likes and retweets (shown below).
Spread
The hashtag took off the following day, as several posts on March 9th gained hundreds of retweets and likes. For example, Twitter user @Its_JMV_Bro gained over 320 retweets with pictures of his cats (shown below, left). User @scottblue1388 gained over 230 retweets for their post of a cat with a cowboy hat on (shown below, right).
Other users posted different animals with the hashtag, growing popular with both english and korean-speaking users. For example, user @LTMusical posted a blue squirrel, gaining over 210 retweets (shown below, left). User @GRthelittledino posted a picture of a parrot that gained over 300 retweets (shown below, right). The memes were covered by Daily Dot,[3] Mashable,[4] Indy100,[5] and others.
