As for "criminals", there's a difference between severity of crimes. Would you like to treat all law-breakers equally and split families of jaywalkers and people who receive tickets for road speeding?

They are over crowded and underfunded for years by people who don't think people coming here illegally is a problem (Let alone dying of exposure in the desert), it was only a matter of time before the whole system imploded despite all the warnings.

Inaction was the worst crime that has happened to these people, if there was proper funding and security 1000s would not have died of exposure and even more wouldn't be being taken advantage of by human traffickers.
