How Do You Respond Without Sounding Mad? refers to a catchphrase used in a type of post, most notably opening posts of 4chan threads, in which users describe an aggravating situation or remark and ask others about ways to respond to it without appearing as if it infuriated them. Particularly prevalent on 4chan, the meme format has been used since 2019 and achieved particular virality as a thread topic starting in 2022.

Origin

While the question itself doesn't have an exact origin and has been used online and offline prior, the earliest 4chan post with the question was made on the /int/^[1] board of the site in a Japan-themed thread on April 28th, 2017 (shown below). In the post, a user inquires about a way of answering to the troll question "you mad?" without sounding angry (post shown below).

On March 18th, 2018, the earliest thread using the question as an opener was posted on 4chan's /sp/^[2] board. The thread (shown below) garnered three replies.

On March 6th, 2019, a 4chan user made a post about responding to being called an incel without sounding mad in a /tv/^[3] thread. On March 19th, a 4chan user posted an image of the Ed, Edd n Eddy character Kevin, asking how to respond to him calling you a dork without sounding mad (shown below). The /tv/^[4] thread garnered over 130 replies.

Spread

Between 2019 and 2022, the question saw a gradual spread on 4chan, particularly on the /tv/ board of the site, being used as a thread opener. For example, on June 28th, 2020, a user posted an image of the film character Amelie staring at the ceiling during intercourse paired with the question. The thread^[5] (shown below) garnered over 70 replies.

On December 12th, 2022, a 4chan user posted an image of 30 Rock character Jack Donaghy (played by actor Alec Baldwin) together with one of his provocative lines, asking how to respond to it without sounding mad (shown below). The post^[6] was reposted on /tv/ multiple times, with a version shared on June 23rd, 2024, and captioned, "How do you respond without sounding poor and mad?" achieving viral spread outside of the imageboard.

Starting in 2023, versions of the meme appeared outside of 4chan, initially as reposts and later as original memes.
