Yeah, I feel like hollywood writers stopped thinking that following a canon is cool and that the new coolest thing is to wipe your ass with fan's expectations.
But subverting expectations doesn't automatically makes you cool and subversive.
It's a bit worse than death, they're taking the piss out of you for being annoyed that show lost your investment because it'd rather fuck around.
It's about when the worms get to the brain, you at least had intrigue with the plot hooks they set up and now good ol' JR or DH decided, eh fuck people concerned about my plot hooks.
It's watching a writer throw a metatextual temper-tantrum.
And god it coincides with the same time I've seen people bitch about having to follow canon or that they just can't fucking subvert all the time.
