bitletsanddrabbles People who are in self quarantine really have no idea how weird it is to be a base level essential worker through this whole thing. I don't mean a doctor or a nurse or someone else working round the clock to put a stop to it or find a cure. I mean a truck driver or a gas station attendant or a retail clerk. Because everything is basically normal, only a little bit off, and then again not as off as it should be. Every day I get up. I go to work. I sell people things. There are fewer people coming through and they're buying more because they're stocking up or they haven't been shopping in a month, but there are still lines, like always. There's plexiglass between the cashiers and the customers, and no dividers, and we have to continually yell at people not to put their items on the belt until we've finished the previous transaction, and they ignore us or argue with us, same as always. The more rules we have, the more rules there are for people to ignore. And the longer it goes on, the more normal it gets. Pretty much no one thanks us for coming in to work anymore. People are starting to act like we should never, ever run out of an item. It's just blanket assumed that we will have hand sanitizer and soap and toilet paper and people are shocked when we say we're out. But there are still ads on the TV in the break room telling us all to stay home and the more the customers ignore social distancing, the more management puts pressure on us to set a good example, until we're expected to follow standards that are physically impossible. The longer this goes on, the less 'essential' I feel. And then I come home and get online as always and there are all of these people asking what you're doing while you're stuck in quarantine and coming up with fun things to do when you're in quarantine and talking about what you're going to do when this whole thing is over and you can finally, finally leave your house. Everyone just seems to assume that you, the person reading their words, are in quarantine, because everyone's in quarantine. It's like this big, international, universal experience that you're not a part of. It feels like fifteen years from now everyone in the world will be looking at each other and asking "Remember what it was like to be cooped up in the house? Wasn't it awful?" and lP'Il just be sitting there going .no, I don't. I didn't do that." And people will look at me and wonder how I could not know. Source: bitletsanddrabbles 11,283 notes

Elon bet me $1 million dollars (to be given to charity) against a bottle of fancy tequila ($1000) that we wouldn't see as many as 35,000 cases of Covid in the United States (cases, not deaths). The terms of the bet reflected what was, in his estimation, the near certainty (1000 to 1) that he was right. Having already heard credible estimates that there could be 1 million deaths from Covid in the U.S. over the next 12-18 months (these estimates proved fairly accurate), I thought the terms of the bet ridiculous and quite unfair to Elon. I offered to spot him two orders of magnitude: I was confident that we'd soon have 3.5 million cases of Covid in the U.S. Elon accused me of having lost my mind and insisted that we stick with a ceiling of 35,000. 4. We communicated sporadically by text over the next couple of weeks, while the number of reported cases grew. Ominously, Elon dismissed the next batch of data reported by the CDC as merely presumptive while confirmed cases of Covid, on his account, remained elusive. 5. A few weeks later, when the CDC website finally reported 35,000 deaths from Covid in the U.S. and 600,000 cases, I sent Elon the following text: Is (35,000 deaths + 600,000 cases) > 35,000 cases? 6. This text appears to have ended our friendship. Elon never responded, and it was not long before he began maligning me on Twitter for a variety of imaginary offenses. For my part, I eventually started complaining about the startling erosion of his integrity on my podcast, without providing any detail about what had transpired between us.

I feel bad for retail clerks because, if things end up on a social collapse due to people breaking quarantine on a fit of desperation to go back to work, they will be among the very first people to suffer the consequences of that. Social unrest leads to riots, and riots lead to looting, and then, when and if shit really hits the fan, these people will become "essential" in a way none of us would wish on anyone else.

As an essential worker I’ve seen some intense situations and sympathize with Walmart workers as well as be envious of people who can stay indoors all day. Here are some basic moods I see all to often:
Coworkers who are afraid of constant questions from rude people:

Coworkers who are on the floor and are done with everyone demanding service:

Coworkers who just answered the same question from people who don’t listen:

When you are no help at all:

When asked if you can stay later:
