From what I remember, most pyramids were built by paid volunteers, mostly from flood plain farmers who had entire seasons to do nothing better while their livelihood was literally underwater.
It is believed though, that Khufu's Great Pyramids did rely on slave labour, mostly because there were not enough volunteers to do the herculean tasks needed to get it built within his lifetime. Khufu was said to be tyrannical and downright evil, even going so far as to sell his own daughter to prostitution to help paying for the monuments.
