The Second Battle of Ypres was the first time mass gas attacks were carried out during the First World War, where the Germans unleashed Chlorine Gas against French positions.

The only hope for a person caught in one of these early gas attacks was to tie a piss-soaked rag to their mouths and cover their eyes as they retreated to avoid being blinded by the gas. After this, many different versions of mask were tried before each country created what we would term a "modern Gas Mask" during mid-1916.
