Neil Armstrong and Edwin 'Buzz' Aldrin become the first humans to land on another celestial body. (July, 1969)

The [_Commodore Vanderbilt_] was a streamlined version of the venerable Class J1-E 4-6-4 Hudson locomotive that ran on the New York Central System.

The first of its kind to be modified for streamlining on the New York Central, it was christened in 1934 and pulled the [_Empire State Express_] for the duration of its career. Two more locomotives were streamlined in its pattern, designed by Karl F. Cantola. Later streamlined engines on the system would take after the pattern designed by Henry Dreyfuss.

Sadly, none of the Hudsons survive today. All were scrapped by 1954

So today I learned that India was an active participant on the side of the United Nations during the Korean War and sent a medical team to assist them.

First Lieutenant Baldomero Lopez, USMC, leads the 3rd Platoon, Company A, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines over the seawall at Red Beach during the Battle of Inchon, 15 September 1950

Moments after this photo was taken, Lt Baldomero Lopez would earn the <a href="http://nedforney.com/index.php/2018/03/24/medal-of-honor-baldomero-lopez/">Medal of Honor</a> when he was wounded trying to throw a grenade at an enemy position.

The following is his Medal of Honor citation:

"For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty as a Marine platoon commander of Company A, in action against enemy aggressor forces. With his platoon 1st Lt. Lopez was engaged in the reduction of immediate enemy beach defenses after landing with the assault waves.

Exposing himself to hostile fire, he moved forward alongside a bunker and prepared to throw a hand grenade into the next pillbox whose fire was pinning down that sector of the beach. Taken under fire by an enemy automatic weapon and hit in the right shoulder and chest as he lifted his arm to throw, he fell backward and dropped the deadly missile.

After a moment, he turned and dragged his body forward in an effort to retrieve the grenade and throw it. In critical condition from pain and loss of blood, and unable to grasp the hand grenade firmly enough to hurl it, he chose to sacrifice himself rather than endanger the lives of his men and, with a sweeping motion of his wounded right arm, cradled the grenade under him and absorbed the full impact of the explosion.

His exceptional courage, fortitude, and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon 1st Lt. Lopez and the U.S. Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country."

Last Photos of Czeslawa Kwoka, aged 14, Auschwitz-Birkenau, 1940's

"But the most haunting picture shows another child, 14-year-old Czeslawa Kwoka, who was murdered at Auschwitz. It was, Amaral says, one of the most difficult pictures she’s worked on. “It’s very powerful in black and white, but in colour you can see that her lips are bleeding. She had just been beaten by a guard. You can really see the fear in her eyes, but you can also feel her courage. Colour allows us to understand the reality in a much deeper sense.”

The photograph of Czeslawa Kwoka is also part of a special project Amaral is involved in, Faces Of Auschwitz, a collaboration with the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum, for which she is colourising registration photographs from the museum’s archive. It’s the hardest work she has done, she says: “But I think it’s also necessary. They send me the pictures but also the documents, so I have to spend hours looking at their faces, knowing that, after the photo was taken, they were murdered. I need to have that feeling, otherwise I will be transformed into a machine and the whole purpose will be lost.”

Operation Torch, French North Africa, 1942

F--- guys, that kid in the centre of the picture can't be much older than my little step-brother. Someone who isn't old enough to legally drink alcohol or vote, shouldn't be fighting a war.

Anyway, context time since this one is a bit more niche than the others. This photo was taken during <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Torch#:~:text=Operation%20Torch%20(8%20November%201942,they%20might%20support%20the%20Allies.">Operation Torch</a> which was a combined Anglo-American operation which saw them battling the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vichy_France">Vichy French</a> for control of French North Africa.

Although it was initially hoped that the French would surrender without a fight, due to a strong Free French Presence in the region, the invasion force soon came under fire from snipers and coastal artillery batteries. The resulting campaign lasted from 8 November 1942 – 13 May 1943 and resulted in about 2000 casualties for each side.
