Neil Armstrong and Edwin 'Buzz' Aldrin become the first humans to land on another celestial body. (July, 1969)

The [_Commodore Vanderbilt_] was a streamlined version of the venerable Class J1-E 4-6-4 Hudson locomotive that ran on the New York Central System.

The first of its kind to be modified for streamlining on the New York Central, it was christened in 1934 and pulled the [_Empire State Express_] for the duration of its career. Two more locomotives were streamlined in its pattern, designed by Karl F. Cantola. Later streamlined engines on the system would take after the pattern designed by Henry Dreyfuss.

Sadly, none of the Hudsons survive today. All were scrapped by 1954

I don't know about anyone else, but I find this photo to be really sad.

This old lady is sitting in the ruins of her city and is having her picture taken in front of a painting to make it look like she is somewhere safe and peaceful.

I suppose one so inclined could say this is an apt metaphor for Poland as a whole during the Soviet Occupation, but I am sure there are people more qualified than I who can say such things.

So today I learned that India was an active participant on the side of the United Nations during the Korean War and sent a medical team to assist them.

If you'd like to learn more, I came across <a href="https://thediplomat.com/2018/10/indias-forgotten-links-to-the-korean-war/">this article in The Diplomat</a> which gives a good overview of what India did and why.

First Lieutenant Baldomero Lopez, USMC, leads the 3rd Platoon, Company A, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines over the seawall at Red Beach during the Battle of Inchon, 15 September 1950

Moments after this photo was taken, Lt Baldomero Lopez would earn the <a href="http://nedforney.com/index.php/2018/03/24/medal-of-honor-baldomero-lopez/">Medal of Honor</a> when he was wounded trying to throw a grenade at an enemy position.

The following is his Medal of Honor citation:

"For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty as a Marine platoon commander of Company A, in action against enemy aggressor forces. With his platoon 1st Lt. Lopez was engaged in the reduction of immediate enemy beach defenses after landing with the assault waves.

Exposing himself to hostile fire, he moved forward alongside a bunker and prepared to throw a hand grenade into the next pillbox whose fire was pinning down that sector of the beach. Taken under fire by an enemy automatic weapon and hit in the right shoulder and chest as he lifted his arm to throw, he fell backward and dropped the deadly missile.

After a moment, he turned and dragged his body forward in an effort to retrieve the grenade and throw it. In critical condition from pain and loss of blood, and unable to grasp the hand grenade firmly enough to hurl it, he chose to sacrifice himself rather than endanger the lives of his men and, with a sweeping motion of his wounded right arm, cradled the grenade under him and absorbed the full impact of the explosion.

His exceptional courage, fortitude, and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon 1st Lt. Lopez and the U.S. Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country."
