I had a friend who worked as a consultant for people wishing to try and make money on the stock exchange.

He explained to me once that the stock market is basically run by old 90's computers brought in to replace the old method of working everything out by hand, which are just constantly pumping out vast numbers of complex calculations every minute of every day.

These numbers are now so complex, that we don't even understand what they mean anymore.

So in order to do well on the stock exchange, you have to ignore the numbers and instead focus on the people instead. So instead of betting on a company’s actual performance or the percentages on the screen, what you actually have to do is bet on the herd consciousness of the stock traders themselves.

He told me that in simplified terms, when you win you're winning and when you're losing you lose and the trick to the whole thing is to work out when the peak will come and bail out then.
