Quick lesson in expression: "Smiling" <- These expressions look a little off, know why? The reason why they seem "off" is because their expressions are not fully "connected." You see, a smile typically encompasses and deforms the whole face, giving it a realistic and convincing quality. To the left, the expressions are almost difficult to discern, almost falt. The mouths appear to be strangely isolated from the rest of their faces, as if they were merely pasted on. To the right you'll see that the smiles no longer have that disconnect, they actaully give shape and interact with the entire face. A reminder for all you artists out there, failing to illustrate a full connection of movement in the face can make expressions difficult to identify and look fake.
