Well one key component of an escapist fantasy is that the main character is ether somebody you wish you were, or somebody basic enough that you can use your imagination to replace them with yourself.
And even when the main character is generic enough that you can replace them with yourself in your head the idea is more 'this is the you you wish you were' instead of 'this is you as you actually are.'
And with that in mind it really doesn't come as a surprise that the main character of an escapist fantasy normally looks attractive, and when they don't they look average at worst and never what audiences consider ugly.
