The Nightman worked while the other citizens of the city lay safely tucked up in their beds. The Nightman was a sanitationworker who disposed of "unworthy" rubbish during the night. He emptied the latrines, buried the bodies of suicide and execution victims, castrated horses and pigs, and disposed of stray cats and dogs. The Nightman in Christiania (the former name for Oslo) was first based at Bakkehaugen, close to the old National Hospital. In 1823, he moved to Korpehaugen, which was later renamed as Stensparken. The Nightman lived where Fagerborg Church (from 1903) is situated today. This is where he drove every night with his load, known as the night trunk. Muck and stench The southernmost mound was known as Nattmannshaugen. This was where the city's sewagė was dumped, dried and then sold to farmers as fertiliser. The road up to Nattmannshaugen was known as Nattmannsstredet, but in 1820 the residents succeeded in getting it renamed as Pilestredet. The role of the Nightman continued until 1871, when the stench ceased to be tolerated in the middle of the city. Later the same year, the Nightman's house burnt down, marking the end of an era. During the 1930s, the area was turned into a park. Stensparken, the city hill The highest point in Stensparken is known as Blåsen. This pleasant green park used to be a bare, windswept place, Blåsen has been called Jotunheimen (a high mountain range in central Norway), "City Hill" and Korpehaugen ("Raven Hill").
