Molested The Money and the Money Went Bad is a catchphrase coined by Twitter / X user @posting_forever in mid-March 2025. The original tweet read, "Elon molested the money and the money went bad," and was posted in response to a poll that suggested that U.S. President Donald Trump's job approval ratings were falling in Texas. The catchphrase was later applied to tweets about falling stock prices and the allegations of insider trading attached to Trump's 90-day pause on tariffs.
Origin
The expression "the money went bad" is sometimes used colloquially to refer to inflation or currency devaluation. Some instances of the phrase being used online can be traced to cryptocurrency communities on Twitter / X,[2] as seen in a January 17th, 2024, post by X user @changing_normal.

On March 10th, 2025, X[1] user @posting_forever posted the earliest known iteration of the catchphrase "molested the money," writing, "Elon Musk molested the money and the money went bad," in response to a tweet about Donald Trump's favorability dropping in Texas. The post gathered over 16,500 views and 800 likes in a month.

Spread
The phrase "Elon Musk molested the money and the money went bad" continued to make the rounds on Twitter[3] in March 2025, as seen in a tweet by user @MAOCHUD that was posted on March 20th in response to discussions about falling Tesla stock prices.

On March 31st, X[4] user @gayest_tone quoted a video of Donald Trump offering tax-exempt interest rates on American-made cars, writing, "They’re calling it the most molested money of all time." The post gathered over 3,000 likes in two weeks.

On April 2nd, 2025, X[5] user @mitai__ tweeted, "he molested the money so bad he fast tracked the chinese century by atleast a decade," gathering over 1,000 likes in nine days on a tweet quoting the news that Chinese President Xi Jinping will be meeting with European leaders to negotiate trade agreements.
