So as the only omnivore in a predominantly vegan/vegetarian family, I can quite comfortably tell you that meat substitutes fall into two distinct groups.
The decent, but dear, stuff which is very good and actually almost has the texture of meat.
It tends to be quite dry and tastes a bit sour, but if you vegan properly and use a lot of sauces and spices or just put a good deal of effort into your cooking; these sides effects aren't really noticeable.
Then there's the cheap shit, like what's posted here.
Basically they glue lumps of Quorn or other bargain-bucket fake meat together with margarine or some other vegetable fat which just melts into slop the second you cook it.
So, really, buying fake meat is a lot like buying real meat.
Don't be a cheap bastard and make sure you're buying it from a reputable place.
