One of the things my mother told me when I was a teenager has definitely held true twenty-something years later: "You won't see most of those people ever again after high school." All the friends and acquaintances, all the bullies and jerks, all the jocks, preps, cheerleaders, stoners, metalheads, and goths. Hundreds and hundreds of classmates throughout my childhood, yet I've seen only a handful of them since 1999, and most of those just through chance encounters. There is precisely one friend of mine who actually remained a friend after high school and on up to the present. He's the closest thing I have to a brother. Everyone else, though? Practically strangers these days.
