Somade August 18, 2017 Blog Essays Bacha bazi, or 'boy play', is an Afghan custom that involves boys as young as nine being forced to dress as women and to dance seductively for an audience of older men. Bacha bazi was common, particularly in rural parts of Afghanistan, for hundreds of years, before being outlawed by the Taliban government in the 1990s. The practice underwent a resurgence after the overthrow of the Taliban by US forces in 2001, and whilst efforts have Speeches been made over subsequent years to stamp out the practice, they have been largely unsuccessful due to government corruption and the reluctance of the US to involve themselves in domestic Afghan affairs. In January 2017, the Afghan government belatedly moved to criminalise bacha bazi, and is finally beginning to act to prevent abuse and protect victims, LMASodcasts with mixed success thus far.

Last year, it was tolerable but in the last few months, it's become more and more congested. Another thing I don't like, not only about Kabul but broadly about life after the fatha, are the new restrictions. In the group, we had a great degree of freedom about where to go, where to stay, and whether to participate in the war. If a day was sunny we might ride horses with our brothers. Eat what we can. Train and laugh and feel blessed. However, these days, you have to go to the office before 8 AM and stay there till 4 PM. If you don't go, you're considered absent, and [the wage for] that day is cut from your salary. We're now used to that, but it was especially difficult in the first two or three months. There is another thing I dislike and that's how restricted our lives are now, unlike anything we experienced before. The Taleban used to be free of restrictions, but now we sit in one place, behind a desk and a computer 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Life's become so wearisome; you do the same things every day. Somehow "women's rights" and "not screwing little boys" were mutually exclusive conditions over there for whatever reason. And those things only can happen for all the wrong reasons. We got women's rights over there only as a happy accident, while the Taliban only banned Bacha Bazi because it was "homosexual" (aka, the old "homosexuals = pedophiles" chestnut). The only way to have it both ways was for us to literally colonize that area, something that we just don't have the resources to do, let alone the political capital even post 9/11
