It was built on a hill near a cliff, and had wide open courtyards with numerous chokepoints, and was designed so that the defenders could easily fall back to other defensible locations should the first ones fall. The castle was set up so that it was very difficult to scale any walls without being easily noticed, and should someone make it to the top, the floors were designed to squeak very loudly so that whoever was there wouldn't go unnoticed.
