have you ever talked to a tankie before? because I assure you, this ain't much of an exaggeration.

It comes from the nationwide uprising against the hungarian communist government in 1956, which was brutally crushed by the soviet army. Most western socialists condemned the soviet intervention but some supported it, saying that the soviets should send tanks into hungary to crush the revolution. These Socialists where therefore called 'tankies'.
