He returned to agricultural work, but eventually got a bursary to continue his studies and went to France. But because of his activities in the progressive student movement there, the authorities cut his bursary and forced him to return home. Pol Pot, prime minister of Democratic Kampu- chea and general-secre- tary of the CPK. Pol Pot joined the underground movement back home against French colonialism in the carly fifties. Minor political liberalization in the country after the 1954 Geneva Accords allowed him to return to Phnom Penh and work as a history and geography teacher in a private school. But clandestinely, Pol Pot was in charge of the underground movement in the capital city and was also responsible for the liaison with the armed resistance in the countryside. "I was active in the student milieu, with intellectuals, with workers and also with peasants," he told an interviewer. In 1960, when the Communist Party of Kampuchea (CPK) was formed, Pol Pot was named to the Perinanent Committee of the Party's Central Committee. In 1961, he was made Vice-Secretary of the Permanent Committee. He assumed the post of General- Secretary of the Party temporarily the next year when the first Party leader was assassinated. The 1963 Second Congress of the •Pol Pot- A life of revolutionary struggle CPK confirmed him as Party leader, a post he has held ever since. Pol Pot led the CPK, from a handful of men and women with few arms to a vast movement of tens of thousands of peasants, workers and patriots, who liberated their country entirely in the short space of 15 years. One of the grossest slanders in the Western press against Kampuchea has been the attacks on the country's leader. Pol Pot is portrayed as "an ignorant jungle man, fearful and hateful of cities." Soviet and Hanoi reports, meanwhile, have had Pol Pot either dead or in desperate fnight from the country. During the years of guerilla war, Pol Pot criss-crossed the country many times on foot. His base of operations was in the northeast mountain regions, among the minority tribespeoples. PHNOM PENH FALLS- CAMBODIA FREE! The final victory of the Cambodian Revolution on April 17, following the liberation of Phnom Penh, ends a heroic struggle that will go down in history as one of the most remarkable wars of liberation of recent times. Cambodia-China Friendship Association and ordered the arrest of Chan Seng, Hu Nim and Khieu Samphan, all leftwing members of the National Assembly. REVOLT GUERRILLA BEGINS On March 18, 1970, Cambodian Prime Minister, Lon Nol, surrounded the National Assembly with troops and forced the MPs to agree to dismissing Prince Sihanouk as Head of State. Sihanouk was at the time in Peking, after leaving Cambodia on January 4, for medical treatment in France. On March 11, rightwing mobs had sacked the embassies of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam and the Provisional Revolutionary Government of South Vietnam. Sihanouk had warned then that these attacks were preparing for a rightist coup. However, at the same time, he went to Moscow and Peking to press those governments to force the PRG to withdraw its forces allegedly in Cambodian sanctuaries. Prince Sihanouk, however, quickly estimated the new. The guerrilla revolt commenced at the end of 1967, and by December 1968 the Khmer Rouge were active in 11 of the country's 19 provinces. By June 1969 they had a reported 1,500 under arms, while Hu Nim was said to be leading a guerrilla band of 50 to 100 guerrillas south-west of Phnom Penh. The Khmer Rouge carried out government and police posts, while concentrating on building support among the peasantry. They avoided frontal attacks on Sihanouk and concentrated their fire on Lon Nol and the rightists. It was this guerrilla force, already fighting for over two years, that accounted for the rapid successes the liberation forces gained after March 18, 1970.
