About
Friendslop is a humorous and derogatory slang term describing video games primarily meant to be played together with friends and, more narrowly, indie cooperative horror games such as Lethal Company and R.E.P.O., among others. Coined in March 2025 alongside the complementary term "Friendfarming," the term was initially mocked but later achieved recognition on social media.
Origin
"Friendslop" is a portmanteau of "friend" and "slop," a slang term that gained popularity in mid-2020s to describe content and media of poor quality.
The earliest notable instance of the term "friendslop" being used online is a November 16th, 2024, X[1] post by user @regularaugust in which they used the term to humorously describe the slice of life anime genre, which is not connected to its later, more widespread meaning. The post received over 770 reposts and 6,300 likes.
On March 17th, 2025, X[2] user @wooosaaaahhhhh made a post which used the word to refer to cooperative games, and to describe indie co-op horror games Lethal Company, Content Warning and R.E.P.O., all three sharing common gameplay elements. The post (shown below) received over 2,600 reposts and quotes and 7,400 likes in one month.

In a follow-up post, @wooosaaaahhhhh clarified[3] that the post was meant to be a joke.
Spread
In the following hours of @wooosaaaahhhhh's mid-March 2025 tweet, the post became a subject of mockery on X / Twitter, with users defending the co-op games and ridiculing the author of the original post.
For example, on March 18th, 2025, X[4] user @Comrade_Waluigi made a quote post that received over 2,200 reposts and 35,000 likes in one month (shown below).

In April 2025, the term achieved widespread use on social media, mainly being used to describe indie cooperative games.
For example, on April 8th, 2025, X[5] user @thefinalsage used the term to refer to an indie cooperative game based on the myth of Sisyphus. The post (shown below) garnered over 240 reposts and 6,600 likes in three weeks.

The term experienced a spike in prevalence following the announcement of co-op horror game Scary Cargo, whose derivative gameplay sparked jokes about the genre starting to devolve into "friendslop."[6][7]
