I think that this comic is supposed to say that modern Western society is a place where being straight (or "super straight") is seen like being LGBT before the 1980s, and thus some people pretend to not be straight to blend in.
As someone who lives in NY… nope, not at all. Though maybe it's because I live in an area with a reasonably sized immigrant population, seeing how they aren't invested in these sorts of politics. From what I can tell, the only place where things are this bad are in micro-communities that largely don't exist outside of online bubbles.
On the other hand, it only takes a couple of loud assholes to make everyone feel uncomfortable, especially if people are afraid to tell them to shut up. So I can guess why some people feel that they're being singled out.
