Jared Prymont • 6 years ago I remember my grandmother telling me about them, she was part of a family that fled the collapse of Yugoslavia to Australia (1940s) but still was wary of 'Gypsies' when she came to Australia. Being of a poor class of people she said that Gypsies were lower than the peasants, often thieves and shouldn't be trusted. Whenever she forgot where she put a shovel or rake in the garden she would say 'A gypsy has been here!' or 'It was pinched by a gypsy!'. It was sort of funny for me because I never met a gypsy and I doubt many if any at all came to Australia- they were like this mysterious group that you had to be careful of regardless of where you were in the world. She may have left behind her country and home but she took with her the prejudices she had. 凸29 3
