Yeah, your average game doesn't need graphics that are that realistic for it to be a fun game, so if developers have their priorities straight we won't see simulated hair strands for a very long time. Like at least a decade or two.

Unfortunately a lot of developers don't have their priorities straight, so we can expect the first attempts to happen within the next three to five years.

The argument is more 'it's good enough as it is, go spend the dev time/system requirements/money on something more meaningful to the game experience". There's a line of graphical adequacy that we've crossed.
