I always thought of derp as a synonym for "I made a mistake". notice how you'd usually use the word in this way: "I derp'd" or "my computer derp'd" this suits derpy perfectly. she's clumsy and makes mistakes. has nothing to do with being retarded. I've seen tons of images that make fun of retards, but never one with the word "derp" associated with it.
