BILLIONAIRE VILLAIN MASKED HENCHMEN Villain is a rich a------ who lives in a mansion/ compound with tons of henchmen I get that it establishes the strength of the villain but it's so cliche at this point If there's a billionaire in the plot he's either the hero or the villain, there is no in-between MARY SUE A character, usually a strong woman, who starts the movie already an expert in everything she does, awing everyone around her Big offenders are Rey, Korra, Mulan in the new version, etc. Doesn't deliver a satisfying character arc SHOEHORNED SOCIAL MESSAGE The plot is happening and then there's a sudden social or political message, usually a fourth-wall break dream with trippy, usually animated visuals Distracts from what's going on and usually ages poorly once the issue disappears in the next news cycle After a no-chemistry dating montage, they're a couple and stay together for the rest of the movie, although occasionally there's a manufactured drama sideplot Reddit loves these for some reason MISCOMMUNICATION BREAKUP The villain's henchmen all either wear masks, sunglasses, or helmets that cover their faces There's a slight play on words or awkward situation and the female love interest freaks out and breaks up with the protagonist Psychologically, the filmmakers do it to dehumanize the enemy and make the audience not feel bad when the protagonist f------ murders them This is pretty much the plot of every bad romcom and it leads to an inevitable "sad pop song" montage before the characters get back together I hate this because it removes the gravity of the hero's action and prevents emotional depth and 2D antagonists CONSTANTLY SMILING This is a big one in animated films: every character is always smiling at all times no matter what's going on in the plot It's done for the babies but it removes all sense of emotional realism from the film and completely neuters the stakes LIAR REVEALED The protagonist has to tell a small lie in the first act, then at the end of the second act the lie gets revealed and every other character turns on him So f------ stupid because there's almost always a sad song montage followed by redemption and it's useless to waste time on a foregone conclusion Daddy TRIPPY DREAM SEQUENCE DANCE PARTY Character has a Generally just a way to pad the runtime and stroke the director's ego Animals that communicate with humans for the sake of comedic relief Make animal- related puns and movements The CGI is usually lazy and comes across as desperate dance party! Climax is over, movie is ending, time for the cast to have a Whenever this happens I assume the screenwriters don't know how to finish the plot Usually a device for end credits to be projected over them BIG PUPIL HEROES The protagonist and other "good" characters have massive pupils, which indicate trust RETCONNING PRIOR PLOT SHOT IN SHOULDER If it's a film sequel, it blatantly changes the plot from the first one and decharacterizes established personalities But holy f---, it's not subtle at all and it just telegraphs the film's direction and makes it uninteresting If it's a film adaptation of a book, it glosses over or changes a vital component CALY EXPOSITION VOMIT At the very beginning of the movie, a character explains the entire premise in one single monologue or lazy lines of dialogue "I'm your brother and we live in New York City and our father is dead and we have to steal the emerald to bring peace to our disgruntled mother" Big fans of the plot will always notice and get mad, it's not good for anyone UGLY/SHORT VILLAIN If there's a character that's exceptionally ugly or exceptionally short (with the exception of Hunchback of Notre Dame and Elephant Man), they're almost always a villain A character coughing means that they're sick or wounded CO Modern filmmakers are sorta kinda getting better at this but even today the majority of villains are either really ugly or really short How many times have you seen this: character coughs into a white cloth, pulls it away, sees blood, and hides it from the other characters POP CULTURE REFERENCES Usually in comedy movies: a character makes a reference/joke to something in the news at the time the film was made These generally age like milk but at least whenever I see one I say "oh yeah, that was a thing that happened in 2004" IT WAS ALL A DREAM! At the very end of an amazing plot-filled movie, the protagonist wakes up When a character needs to be hurt but not incapacitated, he gets shot in the shoulder It's seen as the "best" place to get shot and it's one of those "pour some vodka in it then take a pull and you're fine" Usually played off as a dramatic twist, but it comes off as incredibly lazy In reality, the shoulder has many vital ligaments and getting shot there will render your arm virtually useless for a while JUSTICE P--- The protagonist is wronged in some way (usually a family member gets killed) and goes on a rampage in the name of justice Literally a means by which the audience can get a vicarious sense of satisfaction and justice If considered objectively, it's almost never a justified murder spree QUINTESSENTIAL TRIO How many times have you seen this main character dynamic: three main characters, two are men and one is a woman, the woman is the love interest of the protagonist and the other man is the best friend/comedic relief Also, the comedic relief is usually the token minority This is such a common trope that as soon as three main characters are established, I know exactly what's going to happen in their dynamic HUMAN SHOEHORNED ROMANCE TALKING ANIMALS COUGHING DEATH OLD FOOTAGE POP SONG INSERT EVERYTHING EXPLODES The plot is happening and all of a sudden there's an opposite-sex single character for the protagonist to fall in love with They almost always die before the end of the movie A car crashes at 15MPH? Explosion. One bullet hits a truck? Explosion. A brick falls off a building? Explosion. When the runtime needs to be padded so the filmmakers include straight-up footage from a previous film or another property Usually presented in a flashback scene and always comes across as lazy to those who've seen the other film OVERUSED CGI A scene passed off as real but that uses very obvious and poorly-done CGI Not a huge problem in 2023 but rewatch a mid- budget film from the late 90s/early 2000s and you'll see what I mean ENHANCE Some agency is investigating something and they have a grainy picture and they magically add pixels to it Some other flashy techy BS happens on the computer screen that does not at all represent actual coding FART HUMOR Crude humor is sometimes ok, but I have never, ever seen a funny fart joke Appeals to the lowest denominator of viewer, only actual retards would laugh at the millionth "fat man farts" joke in a comedy film F. B. I. 77135 F. B. I. You would think Hollywood has caught on by now, but I saw this in a film made in 2022 WISE OLD MENTOR Old man who mentors protagonist. Doesn't want to at first, then acquiesces. Almost always dies in a tragic scene, and his advice is remembered just before the climax Is memorialized in some way at the end of the film WALKING FROM EXPLOSION This one has kinda been phased out but in most action movies from the late 70s through the mid 90s, you can guarantee to see a character walk away from an explosion Generally has sunglasses on, and a stern expression on their face The Other Guys parodied this comedically, showing what would actually happen Usually in a montage, a pop song made at the time of the film's release is played over the film Used a lot in romances and kids movies Rarely effective, almost always ages poorly INACCURATE ANTAGONISTS The protagonist can fire a pistol with one hand from 200 yards and hit his target every time but the antagonist and his henchmen can spray the hero point-blank and miss every time To me this makes the villain come off as weak and it lessens the stakes of the action TOO MUCH COMEDIC RELIEF The comedic relief character is given way too much screentime and it distracts from the plot DEUS EX MACHINA All hope seems lost for the protagonist, but then suddenly some magical element comes out of nowhere and saves them Creates a weird tonal dissonance in an otherwise- serious film SUBTLE CHRISTIAN MESSAGE Not so common anymore, but in movies from before 1960 almost every one has some moralistic, often blatantly religious message Even in many modern films there's subtle religious imagery such as haloes and a hero dying for sins, that's played entirely straight t C It almost always comes off as lazy writing and makes me groan C-3 CONTIN VILLAIN ASSAULTS LOVE INTEREST Common with Bond films, action, and a lot of animated movies surprisingly The villain hates/is competing with the hero so much that he tries to r--- the love interest MN I'm really not sure why filmmakers like this trope so much, it's just confusing to me Makes everything look flashy but hilariously unrealistic BLATANT PRODUCT PLACEMENT A real-life product is featured prominently in the movie as part of a marketing partnership Usually the character makes explicit reference to it and turns the label toward the camera, almost always pulls me out of the scene SEXUAL OBJECT A hot woman who exists for the sole purpose of showing her t--- and being madly in love with the male protagonist Usually very little dialogue, she tries to f--- the hero as fast as possible, she's promiscuous and obedient
