In Tall, Tall Mountain, it is possible for Mario to touch the bottom of the level, but then remain in bounds with a wall jump. Despite Mario still being alive and clearly still being able to get out of the pit, the game will simply declare him dead anyway

In 64 DS, Pokeys can survive without their heads. If Yoshi eats a Pokey's head and then lands on a Fly Guy, the Pokey will not die despite its head being severed from its body. The Pokey will continue living as long as Yoshi keeps jumping.
