Supper Mario Broth @MarioBrothBlog In Super Mario World, Mode 7 boss battles appear to have backgrounds even though this should be, on a technical level, literally impossible. This is done by using sprites to "fake" a simplistic background layer. Details in image. MARIO 0 TIME 261 00 X MARIO 0 1010 TIME 261 0x 1 1010 The Morton Zone Post In Super Mario World, many boss battles use Mode 7 to rotate objects. The object to be rotated (Morton here) is not a sprite, but a background layer. Every horizontal line that has a Mode 7 layer (i.e. every row of pixels on screen that the boss can occupy) cannot have any other backgrounds. MARI Regular background... The Morton Zone (Mode 7) But then what are these? If the Morton Zone cannot have any backgrounds in it, how did Nintendo add those planks in the background? 7112 Regular background By disabling everything except the background, we can see that the top and bottom of the screen, due to not being part of the Morton Zone, use a regular background mode, and are not subject to the same limitations as Mode 7. However, this also reveals the planks are missing. The reason the planks are missing from the background view is because they are actually sprites. This is a view that shows only the sprites, revealing that everything that isn't Morton but has to be located in the Morton Zone is a sprite to circumvent this limitation. ource: info: YouTube user "@Samb", youtube.com/watch?v=aRquhZ_ae_c; image: Supper Mario Broth, screenshots taken in a SNES emulator, game: SMW (NA)
