291 Criticism of Unschooling from a former student (self.unschool) submitted 2 years ago by mattnovum So, I just want to share my thoughts here for those interested is unschooling. Please be aware that it can be a very poor experience, and I would caution anyone against pursuing it. I am 35 now, and still continue to struggle with social interactions and making friends, even though I know all of the "what about socialization?" rebuttals which don't actually happen in practice. Yes, public schools are flawed, but unschooling is not the answer. I was unschooled from 2nd grade until graduation, and my mom was a very prominent figure in the unschooling world so I knew many other families and can say these experiences were not just my own. I want to warn anyone who is considering this practice: Most adults don't have ideas of what to learn or what they want to do, let alone children; expecting children to direct their own education this way is idealistic at best, neglectful at worst. I can't tell you how many times I was berated and yelled at for "not having enough interests" and being blamed for my lack of an education. I was depressed, isolated, and most of all I blamed myself for the failure of an un-thought-out system. And when it came to socializing, it was the same: I was blamed for being friendless, i was told I was failing at unschooling and needed to try harder, and I had nowhere to turn to for support: other unschooling families just fed me the same unwavering dogma of "you're free to do what you want, stop complaining and figure it out" or "how DARE you say you have no friends or social life, I'll get you all this literature some other mom wrote about how socialization is not a problem in unschooling, that'll set you right." On the other hand, it was highly discouraged to associate with any "public schoolers" because of their dangerous ideas. Unschooling puts the blame on the child, and allows neglectful parents to flourish. If you're uneducated, it's your fault, since you (as an uneducated child) are in charge of your education. Some (most) parents, mine included, use unschooling as a way to let their children run free and absolve themselves of any guilt for developmental delays, since the child is in charge. (Oh he can't read? That's okay, he'll learn it when he feels like it...)

Learning to read: My oldest is 7.5 yr old in "second grade" and has always been "unschooled" She wanted to learn to read. I bought the good and beautiful literature curriculum. The kinder prep and then kinder curriculum. Plus bob books, letter flip cards, wooden letters etc. The curriculum comes with videos which we love so far. (Before this we did the usual closed captions on, playing games, video games, teach your monster to read app, and abc mouse) It's not going great tho. I'm getting frustrated, i don't know why. And she is getting frustrated. And now our joy of learning is not there for this topic. The prep course is a lot of like vowels and two letter sound blending. But i get why this is hard to learn because it isn't practical. Because it isn't even words yet. I'm thinking because she is older i need to maybe move on to harder. But at the same time "they" keep stressing, they need to know the sounds all letters make and how to blend before moving on. Blah. It's been challenging in society because 1. Her acting class for her age group she is the only one who can't read. 2. In our homeschool coop she is the only one who can't read in her age group. 3. At girlscouts they are all her age and can read and write and she can't. (I have feelings about this on my end like I'm doing her a disservice, so looking for support on this from my community please ) When i talk to her about it she is fine with it she advocates for herself and says i can't read yet please help me, and they do. And i keep telling myself, it's normal for homeschool kids to be behind in this. That's my mantra. She can't excell at all subjects at once and she certainly is advanced in other aspects. So for those who have older kids who have been unschooled by you and can read and write. How did this go in your household? How did they learn? What was your journey. RADICAL Radical Unschooling Top contributor Emilie Holzinger Jul 31, 2023 Has anyone unschooled a child who organically learned to read/write on their own like a child who naturally teaches themselves how to stand and walk? And at what age did this happen please? My child is 8.5 and i recently went to a homeschool event where a reading tutor expressed her disappointment that i missed the window and now my child will struggle I was under the impression that my child would naturally learn as her desire grew as with all things in this human life. But would love some anecdotes to support us in this unschool journey. Thanks! Thank you! ①70 189 comments
