The first six notes of the melody are identical to the melody played on the Recorder in the original The Legend of Zelda on the NES, which was adopted as the melody of the Warp Whistle in Super Mario Bros. 3. While the item could originally be interpreted as a cameo of a Zelda item in a Mario game, the melody later appeared in both series independently of each other, suggesting that this item is no longer a reference but simply something that exists in both universes. ...an ending screen that features Link and Zelda standing in the Hyrule Castle courtyard. The camera is angled in such a way that through the window directly above Link, portraits of Bowser and Luigi (two of a series of Mario- related pictures put behind that window as Easter eggs) are barely visible. As such, the game starts off with a melody that connects the Mario and Zelda franchises and ends with a final screen literally containing Link, Zelda, Bowser and Luigi.
