About

AI Art Becoming Yellow refers to the notion that AI-generated art often tends to have a yellowish tint or hue to it. This tendency was reported online in March 2025, with the bias becoming a viral subject of discussions, debates and jokes in May of that year. Tools meant to remove the yellow tint from AI-generated images, including Yellowtint and UnYellowGPT, were developed and made available as the notion went viral in mid-2025.

Origin

In late March and early April 2025, several posts mentioning the tendency of artificial intelligence image generation models such as DALL-E, Midjourney and, particularly, ChatGPT to produce images that are noticeably yellow-tinted were shared in AI-themed subreddits such as /r/ChatGPTPro and /r/ChatGPT.

For example, on March 28th, Redditor post-death_wave_core posted an AI-generated comic about AI art "always having a yellow tint" in the /r/ChatGPT[1] subreddit, receiving minimal engagement. On March 29th, 2025, Redditor dcm3001 made a post highlighting the issue in the /r/ChatGPTPro[2] subreddit (shown below), garnering over 30 upvotes and 50 comments.

r/ChatGPTPro • 2 mo. ago dcm3001 Why is every image yellow? Prompt I have been trying for 2 days straight to make a travel poster that does not have a yellow tint. I have tried: • Saying "no sepia filter" • Natural colors • No yellow overlay • Cooler tones (everything becomes blue - including greens) • Listing the hex codes of every element in the image (none being yellow) • copying a photo • matching the style of a poster that does not have the yellow overlay • • asking chatgpt to create a prompt that will not produce a yellow image asking chatgpt to tell me why everything is yellow. There are probably 100 more things I have tried but everything is always yellow or terrible. If you look through this sub, almost everything is yellow. The posters are amazing, but the prompts are getting so long to try to mitigate the yellow that it forgets other design elements. It also takes so many attempts to get something usable that I hit the rate limits. Has anyone else been struggling with this? Any solutions? Do you think OpenAl will fix this because it is a new model and these are teething issues? One of ChatGPT's responses to how i should fix this was to offer to create a prompt for midjourney

As of May 2025, no extensive research into the issue had yet been performed, however, some users suggested that the anomaly might be caused by a training data bias resulting from AI learning to mimic the aesthetic of warm color tones of professional photography and digital art, and photographs taken during "golden hour," in particular.[3] Old artworks, aged photographs and sepia had been mentioned as possible contributing factors.[4]

In 2024, a report saying that AI-generated images had a bias for a combination of orange-and-teal color scheme was published by Flitto DataLab.[5]

Spread

On April 29th, 2025, X[6] user @SwampCommunist made a comment about an AI-generated artwork referencing the 100 Men vs. 1 Gorilla meme having a distinctive yellow tint to it, surmising that it might have been caused by the recent popularity of Studio Ghibli AI Images. The post (shown below) received over 2,700 reposts and 91,000 likes in one month.

Piss Filter

Piss Filter is a slang name given to the golden (yellow) filter that frequently appeared in video games released during the period of seventh generation consoles between 2005 and 2013, most notably Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Fallout 3, Resident Evil 5 and Metal Gear Solid 4. Posts mentioning the "piss filter" appeared online since 2011, with the term regaining popularity in early 2020s.
