My memory on it's a little fuzzy, and maybe it's because Spell of the Unown was, and still is, my favorite of the Pokémon movies, but I remember thinking Unown would be a much bigger deal than they ended up being or maybe I'm misremembering them being hyped up in the marketing of the Johto era. After that movie they only appeared on the anime a handful of times and from what I don't think they ever played much of a role in the games.
